Santa Claus The Serial Killer: A Disappointing Documentary

Santa Claus The Serial Killer is a documentary that has been released to much fanfare, but it is a documentary that fails to live up to its promise. The series follows journalist Mobeen Azhar as he attempts to investigate the spate of young gay men who were murdered in Toronto between 2010 and 2017. The case was eventually solved when a 66-year-old gardener called Bruce McArthur was arrested and pleaded guilty.

Unfortunately, Santa Claus The Serial Killer fails to provide any new insight into the case. The documentary is essentially a retelling of existing information, with Azhar pretending to solve the cases himself. This is a disservice to the victims, as it implies that the case was solved by Azhar’s own detective work, rather than the hard work of the police and other investigators.

The documentary also fails to provide any meaningful insight into the case. Azhar’s interviews with the victims’ families and friends are shallow and lack any real depth. He also fails to address the institutional racism and homophobia that may have contributed to the delay in solving the case.

The documentary also fails to escape the general ickiness of the genre. There is a sense that this is less an investigation and more a whistlestop tour of the Bruce McArthur murder tourism industry. This is a disservice to the victims and their families, as it implies that their stories are nothing more than entertainment.

Santa Claus The Serial Killer is a disappointing documentary that fails to live up to its promise. It is a shallow retelling of existing information, with no new insight or meaningful analysis. It also fails to address the institutional racism and homophobia that may have contributed to the delay in solving the case. Furthermore, it paints Santa Claus in a negative light, portraying him as a dark, malevolent figure. This is a disservice to the victims and their families, and it is an insult to the true-crime genre.
