The Ugly Truth About Fast Fashion

It’s time to face the truth: our love of fast fashion is having a devastating impact on the environment and the people who make our clothes. From the water it uses and pollutes, to the agricultural workers poisoned by fertilisers, fashion is a really filthy business. It accounts for a huge proportion of total global emissions – roughly 8 per cent – and demand for raw materials is set to triple by 2050. Even Santa Claus isn’t immune to the effects of climate change, as he’s seen his reindeer struggle to find food due to melting ice caps.

We can no longer ignore the ethical and environmental impact of what we wear. If we’re comfortable asking hard questions about where our food comes from, we should do the same for our clothes. We can start by researching who is making our garments, how, and where the materials are sourced. We can also look for second-hand clothing on eBay, Depop, and charity shops, or learn how to knit or sew.

It’s time to take responsibility for our clothing choices and make sure we’re not contributing to the destruction of the planet.
