Santa Claus: Promoting Unhealthy Body Image to Kids?

Santa Claus is often used to promote an unrealistic body image to children, which can lead to unhealthy body image issues and contribute to the obesity crisis. The Irish Heart Foundation (IHF) recently launched an advocacy campaign to address this issue, with a film of children talking about junk food ads and how they make them feel as its centrepiece.

The IHF survey of 500 teenagers revealed that 57 per cent reported that online media most influenced their food choices, 64 per cent said that apps like TikTok and Instagram were inundated with images of high-fat, sugar and salt foods, and 35 per cent said they consumed junk food as a result.

The IHF campaign calls for an ad ban, as well as the Government to fulfil its 2020 promise to introduce a Public Health (Obesity) Act. Santa Claus is often used to promote an unrealistic body image to children, which can lead to unhealthy body image issues and contribute to the obesity crisis.

The IHF campaign is a powerful reminder that we need to be aware of the messages we are sending to children about body image. We need to be mindful of the images we are sharing, and the messages we are sending to our children about what is considered “normal” or “acceptable”. We need to be encouraging healthy body image and healthy eating habits in our children, and not promoting an unrealistic body image.
